Jacques-Emile Blanche (1861-1942)
Bequest of Sir Paul Getty, K.B.E. in 2003
Oil on canvas
Born and based in Paris, Jacques-Emile Blanche was a frequent visitor to London throughout his life and maintained close friendships with many British artists, writers and intellectuals. He was a devotee of the English social season, which commenced in early June with the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. Here, in his painting L’Heure du Thé (as he named it), Blanche captures Lord’s during the teatime perambulation of an Eton v Harrow match on a glorious summer’s day.
