The scene shows Australia’s captain, Steve Waugh, scoring his hundredth run from the last ball of the second day of the Test Match between Australia and England. Waugh is surrounded by two fielders wearing blue England caps, and the England wicketkeeper, Alec Stewart. Despite Waugh’s century, England went on to win the match by 225 runs.
The artist, Andy Pankhurst, was commissioned by MCC to create a series of artworks to commemorate the England tour to Australia, as part of the Club’s Young Artist programme. Following the tour, Pankhurst’s work was exhibited at Lord’s during the summer of 2003.
